🛡️ The By The Shore Training Advantage:

Unlike crowded dive shops that rush 10–12 students through pool cattle-calls, By The Shore SCUBA limits class sizes to low student-to-instructor ratios (typically 4:1). You receive individual coaching from PADI Master Instructor Kevin Alexander in a heated indoor Raleigh pool and calm Fantasy Lake spring quarry.

Detailed Course Curriculum & What You Learn

Module 01

Precision Weight Check & Ballast Optimization

Determine your exact ballast needs to avoid being overweighted—the single biggest cause of excessive air consumption and poor trim.

  • End-of-dive 500 PSI weight check calculation
  • Wetsuit neoprene compression compensation
  • Freshwater vs. saltwater weight adjustments
  • Distributing trim weights on tank straps
Module 02

Center of Gravity & Horizontal Trim Tuning

Adjust tank height, BCD positioning, and weight pockets to achieve horizontal “torpedo” trim without leg-drag or sculling hands.

  • Eliminating hand-sculling completely
  • Achieving horizontal trim at eye-level with the reef
  • Lung volume breathing micro-adjustments
  • Static hovering at multiple depths
Module 03

Advanced Propulsion & Obstacle Navigation

Master the frog kick, modified flutter, helicopter turn, and backward kick to maneuver around delicate marine structures without stirring up silt.

  • Frog kick execution for zero-silt propulsion
  • Helicopter turns for 360° stationary pivoting
  • Backward kick for backing out of tight spaces
  • Navigating obstacle courses with zero contact

Frequently Asked Questions

How does buoyancy training improve my air consumption?

When you are neutrally buoyant and in horizontal trim, your body creates minimal hydrodynamic drag. You swim with effortless frog kicks and breathe calm, relaxed breaths, easily extending your bottom time by 15–20 minutes.
